The Kumbh camps are designed and set up for each of the Kumbh Melas, to accommodate the mass influx of pilgrims for the event. Undertaken for a spiritual organisation, temporary premises were set up for the Allahabad Kumbh in 2013. The Allahabad Kumbh Mela presents the most challenging site conditions‚ firstly, it a winter Kumbh, and all of the work has to be executed in freezing temperatures; secondly, the camp site is allotted merely 20 to 30 days before the Mela is inaugurated, given the changing course of the river. The design for the 2013 Kumbh followed a Kutchhi concept, using typical Kutchhi artwork of cow dung and mud plaster, accented by mirror work and hand-painted with traditional motifs. About 75 artists were specifically brought in from Kutch for the project.
